You likely hear the phrase 「hitting the sweet spot」 often. But where exactly is this spot located?

 Standards of the Sweet Spot

The conventional sweet spot is generally considered to be the center of the racket face. However, due to the increased speed of modern tennis, contemporary rackets are often designed with the sweet spot shifted toward the tip. Furthermore, these areas have become significantly larger than in the past.

The information above is based on the results of my own hitting sessions, which I then cross-referenced with manufacturer specifications. Even if your sensation differs from the official description, it is not a problem. This is because the area where the player feels the most comfortable hitting is the true sweet spot. Your 「personal comfort zone」 is a more accurate standard than numerical specs.

Effects of 「Defining the Sweet Spot」

Defining your personal sweet spot provides the following benefits:

・Improved precision and consistent power: By clarifying the target area, energy transfer loss is minimized. ・Sustained concentration: Having a clear method to focus on the impact moment eliminates distractions.

Practice: How to Find Your Personal Sweet Spot

Finding your personal sweet spot also helps refine your physical intuition.

1. Please imagine a crosshair on the center of the strings to divide the racket face into four quadrants. 2. Please hit balls using each quadrant and along the lines of the crosshair to verify the sensations of each. 3. Please define the location that provides the clearest feedback as your 「Perfect Point」.

It is also vital to understand how the ball behaves when hit in 「unfavorable areas」. Archiving the sensation of miss-hits improves your ability to make micro-adjustments during a match. Additionally, in environments where the ball flies too much, such as at high altitudes, you can increase control variations by intentionally meeting the ball in a less-responsive area rather than simply increasing string tension.

Refined Feeling Governs Your Future 「Professional Transition」

One can hit a ball without being conscious of the sweet spot. However, by paying attention to your intuition, you can quickly detect even the slightest changes in your performance. Refining your physical sensations is not only about winning immediate matches but also serves as essential preparation for a junior player to make a successful 「start dash」 when transitioning to the professional level in the future.
